Running 101 - The Basics

As a beginning runner, you are bound to be offered tips and advice on running (solicited or otherwise) from friends, family and even complete strangers in the sport. While these people are well-meaning and want you to learn from their experiences, it can be overwhelming for the newcomer. Because there is no one correct way to run that works for everyone, you may find the advice offered is often contradictory and not all that helpful.

A good place to start learning how to run properly is with a reputable training magazine such as RUNNER'S WORLD which will provide a sampling of the most up-to-date information on training techniques, nutrition, shoes, clothing and races.

Once you have designed your training program, consider investing in proper running shoes and clothing. The right gear can make a big difference to your enjoyment factor!

When buying shoes, always choose a reputable dealer with knowledgeable and well-trained staff. If you're on Vancouver Island, stop by and visit my friends at FRONTRUNNERS locations in either Victoria or Nanaimo. And in my hometown of Penticton, you will receive exceptional service from the good people at PEACH CITY RUNNERS.
